It is often possible to add electric gate motors to existing manual gates.

A survey will be required to assess what type of gate operator may fit to your existing gates and posts. All electric gate operators require mounting at specific dimensions in relation to the gate hinge. It may be that your existing, manual gates are hung in a way that it is not possible to mount a gate operator in the required position.

It is important to understand that the gate structure must be suitable for automation. The age, style and robustness of the hinge system as well as the gate structure itself must be sufficient. As an example, often old softwood gates are not suitable for automation due to the nature of the gate structure in terms of movement, twisting and warping of the timber. The gate motors have lots of inherent safety features and the gate has to be mechanically sound for reliable operation.

A specialist gate automation installer will have the knowledge, tools and experience to properly and safely install your system.

They will give you a documented and signed handover, provide a warranty that includes call outs and be available for future servicing and repairs. Beninca give full factory support to electricgatequote installers and provide them with regular training and a dedicated technical support department. If your automated gate system is not installed correctly, it will void the warranty, possibly resulting in costly repairs.

Almost certainly!

Installing electric gates may add value to your property by improving security and curb appeal, increasing property valuations and desirability.

If you experience a power failure whilst your gates are closed it is possible to manually release the electric gate operators using keys provided, and push the gates open or closed.

When the power is back on, simply reverse this process. This will be demonstrated by your electric gate engineer on completion of the installation of your system and it is clearly described with images within your Beninca handover document.

Your electrician should bring a 230v, minimum 10amp power supply, to one side of the entrance to power your electric gates. The size of the power cable will depend upon the length of the cable run.

For example a 20 mtr cable run would require a 3 core 2.5mm core cable and a 50 mtr cable run would require a 3 core 4.0mm core cable. Outdoor power should be run in SWA (Steel Wire Armoured) cable.

Control cables:
You may select hard wired controls to operate your gates that require control cables between the house and the gates. If you are trenching for a power cable it could be wise to also lay a pair of screened CAT 5e or CAT6 cables between the house and the entrance. This will be ample for a majority of audio intercom and video intercom systems and the cable cost is minimal.

A majority of intercoms systems now fitted to automatic gates are wireless. This means there are no cables to run around to the intercom handsets inside the house (and no disturbance to decoration) as well as no cable running outside to the entrance. Your specialist electric gate installer should be able to quote for laying in the power if required.

Beninca provide electricgatequote registered installers with a two year, back to base warranty covering gate operators and control systems against manufacturing defects.

Your installing engineer should offer an initial warranty period on the whole system, that includes call outs caused by any faulty products or workmanship, but this will be different on each install and is down to you to organise with your installer (Contract of Sale). Your installer should then advise what further services and warranty they can offer, including servicing schedules based on the type of system and regularity of use. For instance – A multiuser system operating a hundred plus times per day will require more servicing than driveway gates fitted to a single-family dwelling.

Keeping your gate system maintained is crucial in meeting the requirements of the warranty conditions provided by the manufacturer of the automation products, Beninca.

Overall, electric gates do not significantly impact your electricity bills.

For most private residential automated gate systems, a 230v power supply is sufficient. The capacity of a 230v power supply generally meets the needs of most residential environments, where gates are used about 15 times over 24 hours on average.

In terms of energy consumption, electric gates typically use about 100 watts of electricity daily when idle. When active, their energy usage can peak at approximately 700 watts. However, they are not running continuously; an average opening and closing cycle for a gate lasts just 20 seconds each way. This equates to a cost of about 0.2p per cycle on your electricity bill.

We always recommend using a qualified professional installer.

It is recommended that you use a professional installer. Installing an automatic gate closer involves electrical wiring that can be dangerous if mishandled.

A professional installer will ensure your gate meets all local safety regulations and standards, which are crucial for preventing accidents and complying with insurance.

Self-installation could void your warranty. Professionals have the necessary tools and experience to complete the installation efficiently, saving you time and frustration.
